Everyone knows similarity from every day life. Houses look familiar as everyone has seen a similar one before. Even parks might seem known because they look similar to another park someone was at before.

For UX designers the law of similarity can be very important, as it means that elements that have the same/similar visual appearance must have the same/similar function. Buttons for example should all have a similar appearance.
